Ancient wisdom speaks of the Bardo –
the spiritual space between death and rebirth.
This space is not limited to the aftermath of physical death. We enter the Bardo when our old world falls apart and we as yet have no idea how a new world might look. The value of the Bardo is the pause between these worlds. First, we must accept the disruption. We must recognize that our old way of being, our old strategies for coping, no longer work. We are thrown into the terror of not knowing what to do or what comes next. We only know that the old way is no longer an option.
Too frequently, we try to respond to this uncertainty with frantic efforts to deny the problem. We double down on our useless efforts to control our feelings, and the outcome, with old behaviors. If, instead, we can accept the reality of this disruption, we have the opportunity to pause and find our ground again. Fully being with the truth allows a peace that cannot be found in any other way. It is not workable to skip this step. By accepting where we are and how we got here, and pausing to be fully present with it all, we then have the opportunity to begin the process of rebirth, of creating something new. You do not have to do this alone.
